Radio One, Inc. / Music One announced its sponsorship of the Jeff Majors' National Tour for the Homeless, a 9 city humanitarian tour offering food, blankets and other necessities to the homeless which will kick off in Atlanta on Thanksgiving Day, November 27th and extend to 8 other US cities through spring, 2009. Gospel composer and harpist Jeff Majors is host of The Gospel of Music, TV One's signature program and television's only gospel music variety show which will begin airing its 6th season in January, 2009. The Music One CD release Sacred Major 7th featured the Top 30 gospel chart single "Beggar," Majors' collaboration with the legendary Gerald Levert in his final recording and television, appearance, which has been called "the anthem for the homeless." Beginning November 27th, Majors will travel to 9 U.S. cities, assisting local shelter organizations in providing blankets, toiletries, and other special giveaways to help the homeless throughout the year while raising awareness of the growing homeless crisis in these communities. Radio One stations in each market will conduct a 2 week drive in advance of Majors' visit to collect blankets, coats and non-perishable foods items for the homeless and will select community groups in each market to coordinate distribution. Majors will also offer free concerts in each city for the homeless. Majors' 12-city tours in both 2007 and 2008 distributed blankets and street survival kits to the homeless and to date, Majors' efforts have reached more than 150,000 in the in-need community. Majors' moment of spiritual awakening on the homeless issue came in 2006 after a chance encounter on the Howard University Washington, D.C. campus with a former professor who had become homeless. Since that time, he has become personally involved, founding and organizing "The Network of Doves" — a non-profit, 501(C) (3) federally tax-exempt, faith-based ministry of local volunteers who work hand-in-hand with churches, charitable organizations, social service agencies and individuals to respond to the homeless crisis in the United States. Majors has appeared on Capitol Hill and is working with community leaders nationwide to help keep the plight of the homeless at the top of the nation's agenda. In addition, the experience has inspired some of his most personally treasured music, including "Beggar," and "War." Majors is also actively participating in the National Memorial Day for the Homeless which will take place in Washington, DC and over 100 U.S. cities on Sunday, December 21st which will remember and revere the thousands of people who have died homeless on the streets of America in the past year. Majors' humanitarian effort is a personal response to the national statistics on the homeless issue which now affects women, children and veterans at an alarming rate. According to Healthcare for the Homeless, Inc. at least 3,000 people experience homelessness on any given night; more than 30,000 over the course of a year in any given city. Approximately 95 families per week in America go homeless. The National Law Center on Homelessness states at least 3.5 million people will experience homelessness this year.
